Tool Use

The ability of an LLM to invoke external functions — search engines, code interpreters, APIs, file systems — by emitting structured calls that a host system executes and whose results are returned to the model. Tool use is what transforms a language model into an agent capable of acting on the world rather than merely describing it. The quality of an agent's tool design (clear schemas, predictable error messages) is a direct lever on its reliability.
