A performance evaluation or comparison of an AI agent or system, published by the entity that developed or sells the solution. Such benchmarks inherently carry a bias as the author is also the primary beneficiary of positive results.
In practice, vendor benchmarks are common but require critical scrutiny due to potential self-interest. They serve as marketing tools and initial claims, but their findings must be independently verified to establish true credibility and trust, especially in high-stakes agentic applications.
Practitioners often mistake transparent methodology (e.g., open-sourcing code) for independent verification. While transparency is valuable, it doesn't remove the inherent bias of a self-declared victory; it merely invites others to attempt to reproduce it, which is not the same as an independent entity conducting the original test.
