Foundation Model

A large model pre-trained on broad data at scale, designed to be adapted or prompted for many downstream tasks rather than trained for one specific use. GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini are foundation models; the agents built on top of them are not. The term captures the idea that these models serve as the base layer — the foundation — on which products and systems are built.
